The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Unraveling?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a thread keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to determine if progress is being made or imploding.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback
One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team lacking backup options.
He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."
Discovering His Best Role
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
