"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text pops up. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There's just one problem: I also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have openly petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the best bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos repeatedly show them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to start a band."

"Therefore all are welcome to be the next Haim sister."

Award Milestone

The band have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words track departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed resilience required a fresh approach – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.

But the sister act will always be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
